Treavelling to Rome for the First Time

Planning is underway for my first trip of 2020 which will be a first time visit to Rome.

Well 2020 is really with us and as I write this in the UK the days are getting longer and despite the cold snap and winds which are with us, I feel like the curtains are being drawn back on a new year – and with it my next trip to Rome. My wife and I leave in about two weeks and that means it’s serious planning time!

Travelling to popular destinations in the colder months has the advantage of lower numbers but runs the risk of rain. Keeping a watchful eye on the weather sets expectations and helps with packing and planning what to do and see. My usual weather resource is Accuweather, and right now Rome is forecast to be dull but NO rain – fingers crossed

We have four days in Rome and I want to fit in as much as possible. Having an itinerary worked out gives some structure to the trip and YouTube is my first resource to find out more information about places I will be visiting. You can find out just about anything including transportation, hotels, ticketing etc. Both of us have been watching the videos to get a flavour of the city and have prettu much worked out what we want to do.

Packing or planning what to pack is my least favourite part of travelling. For a city trip I always travel as light as possible and that includes my clothing and travel gear which I aim to fit in a single cabin bag – who likes waiting for luggage? I have invested in some good Lowepro bags over the years which can be configured to get the right balance between clothing and photography gear.

This weekend’s job is to sort out tickets for the main attractions I want to visit. Although the tourist numbers will be lower that in the summer months, I do not want to waste time in queuing for entry into the must-see sights. I will likely book a couple of tickets for the Vatican and Colosseum which will include guided tours. It is a little more expensive, but a guide will help us get the best out of those attractions and everything else we will see will be free.

Finally I will sort out my entertainment for the journey there and back. Now let me see…..
